2017 FILM DISTRIBUTION AND INTERNATIONAL SALES
TRAINEE SCHEME OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS

Do you love film and want to gain crucial film business experience?

    We are looking to recruit ambitious trainees from across the UK who display these attributes:

  • Passion for film
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office packages and email
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • A desire to learn

The scheme aims to recruit a majority of candidates from these underrepresented groups in the film industry: Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people and those who consider themselves to be disabled.  This scheme is delivered under section 37 of the Race Relations Act. (Applicants are entitled to decline to share information about their ethnic origin or if they consider themselves to be disabled, should they wish to do so).

Trainees will undertake an office-based placement in a film distribution, or international sales organisation. As well as gaining hands-on experience of working in the film industry, the trainee placements will be enhanced with regular industry insider training to provide the trainees with a comprehensive overview of the film industry.

    What's involved:

  • Placements will start in April (week commencing April 3rd) and run until December 22nd 2017 (38 weeks).
  • Placements at distribution and international sales companies will take place in London due to the nature of the film industry.
  • Trainees will work fulltime (defined as 35 hours per week) in host companies, and will regularly attend training sessions with the other trainees which will further enhance their employability skills and knowledge of the film industry.
  • Trainees will be paid a monthly training allowance equivalent to a percentage of  London Living Wage
  • Trainees will also be entitled to holidays (totalling 20 days a year pro rata subject to agreement with their host organisation.)

    Trainees must...

  • Be recent college/school leavers.
  • Be new entrants to the film industry i.e. not have more than twelve months industry work experience be it continuous or discontinuous / paid or unpaid.
  • Be UK residents and eligible to work in the UK.

This scheme is delivered in partnership with the Film Distributors' Association (FDA), and Film Export UK It has been funded by the Creative Skillset Film Skills Fund as part of ‘A Bigger Future 2’, the UK film skills strategy. The Creative Skillset Film Skills Fund is supported by the National Lottery through the BFI and the film industry through the Skills Investment Fund.

Distribution A film distributor acquires the rights to release a film in a particular territory and is then responsible for the marketing of that film domestically, with the ultimate aim of maximising a film’s commercial potential. Essentially, the role of the distributor is to engage film with audiences. To this end the distribution company will:

  • Set a release date for the film;
  • Decide the method by which the film is to be exhibited: either theatrically (through cinemas), or for home viewing (DVD, Blu-ray, video-on-demand, download, television broadcast);
  • Create marketing materials; manage press relations and arrange promotional screenings (such as exhibitor screenings and the premiere) to raise awareness of the film;
  • Physically distribute the film to cinemas and retail outlets ahead of the film’s release.

International Sales Sales companies are a bridge between the creative and commercial sides of the film industry, acquiring the rights from the producer to licence their film to countries across the world, with the aim to maximise its commercial potential. To this end, the specialist activities of an international sales company may include:

  • Developing, financing and executive producing independent films for export into worldwide markets;
  • Selling the distribution rights of independent films to domestic distributors internationally;
  • Creating the marketing materials that will be used to promote independent films to audiences throughout the world;
  • Formulating marketing strategies for the release and sale of independent films at  the major international film festivals;
  • Offering technical services to producers, ensuring that their films can be exploited effectively in the ever changing digital world.

Candidates who pass the first stage of selection will be invited to attend a recruitment day and interviews will take place week commencing Monday 27 February 2017

Please note due to the anticipated volume of applications it will not be possible to provide feedback to candidates who do not pass the first stage of selection.
