Heath Ledger (1979 -- 2008)
The sad and shocking death of Heath Ledger, aged 28, from a suspected overdose in Manhattan made front page news around the world. Australian by birth, Ledger began acting in his teens and soon moved to Los Angeles.
He had been a leading man for the last five years, starring in films such as Ned Kelly, Lords of Dogtown and The Brothers Grimm. To date he is best known for his performance in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain (2005), which was lauded with Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations.
He will be seen posthumously in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, playing the Joker, and Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which he recently finished filming in London. He leaves a 2 year-old daughter and many admirers.
